Near the tail end of last month, it was reported that Disney was looking to cast Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt in the new Indiana Jones.
While he would be replacing original star Harrison Ford, it looks like another key element will be kept in place. It is being reported this evening that Steven Spielberg wants to direct the reboot of the franchise.
Steven Spielberg is actually championing Chris Pratt for the lead. Deadline claims that if the script is good enough, and it's a story that Steven Spielberg wants to tell, he will come back for this fifth installment. The director has helmed all four previous entries in the Indiana Jones franchise, starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, and continuing with Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom in 1984, Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade in 1989 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.
Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Disney and LucasFilm. Disney has made it known that a new Indiana Jones won't happen until the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trilogy and its spinoffs are up and running smoothly. Word from those close to Steven Spielberg is that it's still too early to determine exactly what will happen with this proposed reboot, and its unclear if any sort of formal offer has been made to Chris Pratt. The actor was hand-picked by Steven Spielberg for the starring role in this summer's Jurassic World. So this all makes perfect sense for the director and the studio.
