Sunday big clash

  • The hosts are beginning to take over a bit as they enjoy the bulk of possession here. They work the ball around well in the attacking half, but are failing to put any real pressure on the Liverpool defence. Brad Jones has yet to have a touch of the ball, as United fail to ask any questions of their opponents in attack.

The pressure is kept on by the Red Devils and Allen concedes a free kick from 30 yards out as he continues to struggle with the running of Valencia on the right. The free kick is delivered into the area by Young, but again the visitors are able to head clear and deal with the threat.

    Yellow Card Joe Allen

Manchester United push forward and win their first corner of the match. Their struggles defending set pieces this season have been well-documented, but Skrtel rises high to head this one clear as the chance does not come to fruition for the hosts.

Glen Johnson has picked up a knock and based on his gestures to the sidelines, it looks as though he will be unable to continue. Kolo Toure gets up off the bench and begins to warm up as he gets set to come on and replace him in the back three for Liverpool.
  • 24'
GREAT RUN! Liverpool get forward and the ball is worked to Sterling at the left edge of the area. The forward shows nifty footwork to dispose of Jones before getting himself through on goal. He has a shot from a tight angle, but it was always going to be difficult to beat De Gea from there, as the keeper gets a hand up to usher it behind for a corner.
  • 22'
Phil Jones becomes the second player in the book as he arrives late with a challenge on Coutinho. Despite the deficit, Liverpool have looked the more comfortable side in possession through the opening stages of the match, with United giving it away far too often in midfield under the heavy pressing of the visitors.
  • 21'
    Yellow Card Phil Jones
  • 20'
STAT ATTACK: Manchester United come into the match on the back of five consecutive league victories. It is the first time they have managed that feat since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
  • 18'
SHOT AND SAVE AGAIN! Captain Gerrard lives for the derby, but there is no magical moment this time as he jumps on the end of a pass at the top of the area and tries to thread a shot through the crowd and in on goal. A deflection off Phil Jones takes the sting out of it, as De Gea collects with ease.
  • 16'
The goal has not done too much to change the flow of the game, as Liverpool still look eager on the front foot. Coutinho finds space on the right and tries to play Sterling through, but Evans is able to sniff it out. The visitors win possession back straight away and Adam Lallana wins a free kick from 40 yards out.
  • 14'
David De Gea deserves his fair share of credit as well, coming up with a massive save on Raheem Sterling at the other end, allowing his side to start back the other way on the counter. Just 25 seconds separated the save from the Spaniard and the goal at the other end by the captain.

    Goal Wayne Rooney
The entire goal can be attributed to Antonio Valencia, who does incredibly well to nutmeg Joe Allen and dart into space on the right. He charges towards the area and cuts a pass back for Rooney. The captain makes no mistake, striking it first time past Jones and in at the near post.

MANCHESTER UNITED STRIKE FIRST AS OLD TRAFFORD ERUPTS!
  • 11'
Liverpool are pressing very high up the pitch, and the hosts are not doing a good job of dealing with it as they look to build from the back. Some careless passing sees them squander possession inside their own half, but the visitors have yet to take advantage.
  • 9'
STAT ATTACK: This is the 191st meeting between these two teams across all competitions. Manchester United have the edge with 75 wins to Liverpool’s 64. The other 51 ended in a stalemate.
  • 7'
As the teams begin to take shape, it looks evident that each side is playing with three centre-halves. Michael Carrick drops in between Phil Jones and Johnny Evans, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young operating as wing-backs. For Liverpool, Glen Johnson forms a back three with Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren, with Jordan Henderson operating as a right wing-back, and Alberto Moreno filling the same role on the left.
  • 5'
    Yellow Card Marouane Fellaini
  • 5'
Marouane Fellaini becomes the first player to be booked after jut five minutes, as he slides recklessly into the back of Adam Lallana, in an attempt to try and atone for giving the ball away just a few seconds earlier. The ensuing free kick is delivered in again by Gerrard, but dealt with well by United.
  • 3'
Incredibly positive start from Liverpool, who win an early corner. Gerrard comes face to face with the Stretford end, and delivers a strong ball into the area. Coutinho meets it at the far post and heads it back across goal. This leads to a bit of chaos in the area as both Sterling and Skrtel try and direct it toward goal, before United finally clear the threat.

Liverpool kick-off and we are underway at Old Trafford with the biggest derby in the Premier League! The visitors, moving right to left, are sporting their all yellow away strip, while Manchester United are in their classic red tops
